2024 West Kimberley Youth Forum

The West Kimberley Youth Forum was held from December 3 to December 5, 2024 at the Broome Camp School in Broome Western Australia. It involved over 40 indigenous young people aged 15-25 from around the West Kimberley region.

The event was organised by representatives from Kimberley Mental Health Drug Service, West Kimberley Futures Empowered Communities and Empowered Young Leaders who came together to bring this vision to life. A key element for success came from the active involvement of young staff, who bought unique perspective in shaping the event.

The event began with a smoking ceremony by Yawuru elder Aunty Dianne Appleby, followed by icebreaker activities led by the Project Love Team. Participants were divided into groups and attended workshops facilitated by local support organisations, including AKG, BRAMS, KCADS, BC, and special guests from Project Love. A youth panel discussion was a key highlight of the event which showcased stories of young people and their journeys to where they are now. Additionally, each night had a special event which included a pool party with a healthy cook up from Kimberley population health unit and on the final night a concert was delivered by project love featuring local artist Lyrical Instinct.

The key aims of this initiative were to create a safe space for young people to increase their knowledge of mental health and AOD issues, while also providing an opportunity for free expression and open dialogue. We aimed to develop leadership skills and foster positive interactions among West Kimberley youth.

By developing these platforms, we are investing in the leaders of tomorrow, equipping them with the essential skills and education needed in the West Kimberley region. This week has been a great success, marked by positive feedback from participants. The young people have expressed a strong desire to continue the youth forum and are eager to explore further leadership development opportunities.
